Title: The role of pro- and antiangiogenic factors in rosacea
Abstract:
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease of the face’s skin. Erythema of the face is the main symptom of rosacea. Affected areas of the skin develop papules, pustules and phymatous changes. The pathogenesis of rosacea is still unknown. The undesired angiogenesis seems to be the most likely reason of skin changes in rosacea. The balanced ratio between proangiogenic (VEGF) and antiangiogenic (endostatin) factors is necessary to obtain the vascular homeostasis in the angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to define whether there are any dysfunctions in the production of pro- and antiangiogenic factors in patients with rosacea in comparison to the control group of healthy patients. The results of the study revealed that patients with rosacea have significantly higher serum level of VEGF than the control group; however, the serum level of endostatin (which works antiangiogenic) is reduced. What is more, the higher serum levels of IL-6 in patients with rosacea have also been observed. No significant differences in the serum level of TNF-α in patients with rosacea and the control group have been noticed. The administered treatment (local and oral treatment) caused a significant improvement of clinical condition as well as significant reduction of IL-6 serum level. Minor reduction of VEGF serum level and no significant rise in the serum level of endostatin was observed. The serum lev ; el of endostatin was still much lower than in the control group. A significant serum level of VEGF higher in patients with rosacea than in the control group and its reduction after the local and systemic treatment indicates that this cytokine plays an important role in the pathogenesis of rosacea.
