Title: Clinical usefulness of videoelectroencephalography in diagnosing paroxysmal events in children

Abstract:

Videoelectroencephalography (video-EEG) is a modern diagnostic tool, allowed full synchronized recording of clinical status and bioelectric activity of the patient’s brain. The aim of the study was to assess the clinical value and usefulness of video EEG in diagnosing paroxysmal events in children. The analyses were based on assessment of changing the diagnosis (after the recording) correlated with different clinical factors and data. Estimate of influence of video EEG on changing the therapy in patients was important element of undertaken research. The analyses were based on the group of 232 children with paroxysmal events, which were hospitalized in the Department of Child Neurology CM UJ in Krakow, between the years 2000 and 2004. There were 147 girls and 85 boys, aged 3 weeks to 18 years old. The video-EEG monitoring were performed in all analyzed patients in the Clinical Electrophysiology Laboratory CM UJ, on MetronicDantec PL270 with mobile Samsung camera 200M LENS. 21 superficial electrodes were used to detect the electrophysiological activity of the brain. The research showed that the video monitoring allowed to diagnosed all of the children. In half of the group of children with attacks imitating epilepsy, video-EEG allowed to diagnose nonepileptic events. The confirmation of initial diagnoses of nonepileptic attacks were performed in more than half of children with th ; ese events. In 80% of the group, video EEG allowed to change or precise the initial diagnosis. In 111/232 of children the therapy was changed after the video EEG monitoring. The crucial role of videoelectroenephalography in children were confirmed by the analysis.
