Title: Long term results of bariatric : multicenter studies

Abstract:

Bariatrie surgery is no longer considered only as a weight loss surgery but also a way of treating obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Bariatrie surgery has a relatively low complication rate, but the risk associated with surgical intervention cannot be ignored. The aim of the study was a broad analysis of the population of obese patients operated on in the leading polish bariatrie centers, in terms of T2DM remission and the analysis of treatment effects in patients with severe postoperative complications. We conducted a retrospective cohor1 analysis of 240 patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and assessed the rate of remission of T2DM one year and five years after surgery. In the other study, we analyzed 103 cases of patients with severe postoperative complications, whose effects of bariatrie treatment were compared with a case-matched control group. We were able to show that 46% of patients achieved a 5-year remission of T2DM, and that patients who achieved remission of diabetes had better weight loss results and were significantly younger than in the group without remission. The preoperative body mass index (BMI) had no effect on achieving diabetes remission. Among patients with severe complications, the effects of bariatrie treatment <lid not differ compared to patients without complications. Remission rates for both T2DM an ; d hypertension <lid not differ. Our research suggests that diabetes remission after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is common, and even severe surgical complications do not affect the outcome of bariatrie treatment.
