The dis~ertation involves the study of GABAergic neurons m the hippocampus of rats subjected to experimental models of depression: chronic mild stress, chronic unpredictable stress, and olfactory bulbectomy. The animals were also treated with amitriptyline, an antidepressant. Immunohistochemical analysis of the reactivity of three types of calcium-binding proteins expressed as follows: parvalbumin 111 perisomatic inhibitory neurons, calbindin - in dendritic inhibitory neurons, and calretinin - 111 interneuron-selective interneurons, revealed the sensitivity of the tested system to depression modeling conditions. The method used also allowed for the analysis of the principal neurons, i.e. granular neurons in the dentate gyrus and mossy fibers, and pyramidal cells in the cornu ammonis. Different patterns of reactions of the GABAergic system against different experimental procedures and diff erent patterns of reactions in the dorsal-ventral axis of the hippocampal formation were shown at the background of the sensitivity of the principal cells system. The most severe chan.ges in the number and/or reactivity of neurons and regional atrophy occurred in the dorsal and ventral hippocampi, while the intermediate part showed greater stability retaining its role in the processing of nerve circuitry in the hippocampal structure. The amitriptyline used in the study ; showed neuroprotective properties.
