Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a treatment modality, in which bacterial cells are damaged by means of reactive oxygen species, which are generated upon the interaction of three elements: photosensitizer, light and oxygen. aPDT can be applied as a supplementary methos in the treatment of periodontitis. The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of the photodynamic inactivation of periopathogens with the use of two groups of photosensitizers: phenothiazinium dyes (excited by red light) and hybrid photocatalytic materials based on TiO2 (excitrd with blue light). The experiments were performed with the use of bacteria strains: : P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and F. nucleatum. Phenothiazinium dyes were more effective than TiO2-based photosensitizers in the photodynamic inactivation of P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum. A. actinomycetemcomitans was not susceptible to any form of photodynamic inactivation.
