Title: Evaluation of treatment outcomes and prognostic fators among patients with traumatic optic neuropathy treated at the Clinic of Cranio-Maxillofacial, Oncological and Reconstructive Surgery at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków

Abstract:

The objective of the study was to assess treatment outcomes among patients with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) treated at the Clinic from 2000 to 2017, depending on the treatment method and timing of the introduction of treatment, and to investigate prognostic factors present at the baseline that affect final visual acuity. The study included 109 patients with TON. 64 patients were treated exclusively pharmacologically and 45 were treated both pharmacologically and surgically. The study did not show differences between patients treated exclusively pharmacologically and treated both pharmacologically and surgically in the mean visual acuity after treatment, absolute and relative improvement in visual acuity after treatment. In the group of patients treated pharmacologically and surgically, there were more frequent occurrences of both improvement and deterioration of visual acuity after treatment. Better treatment results were achieved in patients with lower reduction in visual acuity before treatment. Better treatment results were obtained in patients whose treatment was started in a shorter time after the injury. The following negative prognostic factors were distinguished: optic canal fracture, optic nerve lesions in pre-treatment imaging, lack of direct and indirect pupil reaction to light before treatment.
