Bacopa monnieri, is one of the most important plant in the system of ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Bacopa monnieri in India has been used for over 5000 years for the treatment of such diseases as: epilepsy, insomnia and as a raw material of sedative and anxiolytic activity. It is believed that the compounds responsible for the above-mentioned activities of the raw material are bacosides, among which bacosides A and B.The objective of the study was to evaluate whether in the biomass of B. monnieri in vitro cultures, there are other inorganic and organic substances, which could have an impact on the profile of its activity. The content of bioelements (such as Na, K, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ca) and selected organic compounds (indole, phenolic compounds and unsaturated fatty acids) was determined for the first time.For the first time, phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid and caffeic acid; indole compounds: L-tryptophan and serotonin, were determined in the biomass of B. monnieri in vitro cultures.In the presented work, B. monnieri in vitro cultures were grown using liquid medium according to Murashige and Skoog with growth regulators: benzylaminopurine (BAP) 1.0 mg/L and naphthenic acid (NAA), 0.2 mg/L. Successful modifications of MS medium were conducted based on its enrichment with the following substances: magnesium sulfate, zinc hydroxyaspartate, L-t ; ryptophan, serine and anthranilic acid. Enrichment of medium with serine or anthranilic acid resulted in an increase in the concentration of the elements in the biomass of B. monnieri. The highest concentration of bacosides was determined in the biomass cultured on media containing a combination of serine with magnesium(VI) sulfate, which accounted for 37.3 mg/g dry weight.Biological studies have demonstrated that extracts of biomass from in vitro cultures of B. monnieri exhibit a protective effect against damages induced by oxidative stress in cell models. The influence of the biomass extracts from in vitro culture of B. monnieri towards blocking the migration of prostate cancer cells was demonstrated.In addition, a protective effect of the extracts from the biomass of B. monnieri in vitro cultures on the viability of neurons has been demonstrated and for the first time, it was shown that they may impair the process of apoptosis. Moreover, the antioxidant effect of the tested extracts was confirmed which may contribute to the development of a promising neuroprotective procedures in the future.
