Title: The role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of delayed cerebral ischemia and cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

Abstract:

Pathogenesis of delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and cerebral vasospasm following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains unclear. Free radicals are postulated as one of the crucial players. The aim of this study was to determine weather the concentration of free radicals in the peripheral blood changes in the course of aSAH and if it is related to the occurrence of DCI and cerebral vasospasm. 35 aSAH patients (up to 48 hours from disease onset, study group) and 13 patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm (control group) were studied. Free radicals in patients venous blood have been detected by the electron paramagnetic resonance on admission and at least 72 hours from disease onset. DCI and cerebral vasospasm was observed in 9 aSAH patients. No statistically significant difference in average free radicals concentration between controls and study group was noticed on admission After 72 hours free radicals concentration was statistically higher in patients, who developed DCI and cerebral vasospasm.
