Title: The assessment of factors having a potential effect on breast cancer detection in mammography screening based on the population-based programme of early breast cancer detection in the Lesser Poland Voivodship in the years 2007-2009

Abstract:

The subject matter of the thesis was the attempt to determine the factors influencing the efficacy of breast cancer detection in mammography screening. It was found that the radiologist’s experience in screening mammography, reflected by the number of mammograms evaluated by him/her yearly as well as the duration of work in the screening was the important factor determining the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostics. On the other hand, no significant effect was found of the number of radiologists evaluating a mammogram (single vs double evaluation) and their specialty degree. Statistically significant relationships between cancer detection as well as falsely negative results and breast structure were found. Dense structure (the predominance of glandular tissue over fatty tissue) was associated with increased risk of cancer and decreased sensitivity of mammography.
