Title: Perceived control as cardiovascular disease risk factor
Abstract:
Development in the methods of treatment of ischemic heart diseaseand changes in exposure to main cardiovascular disease (CVD) riskfactors do not fully explain the reduction in CVD mortality which hasbeen observed in Poland since 1992.The objective of this study was to assess the relationship betweenperceived control and the 1) prevalence of main CVD risk factors, 2)3risk of death from all causes and with the risk of CVD death.A prospective (cohort) study with a five-year-follow up wasconducted. The study group consisted of random sample of 10 728permanent residents of Krakow at age 45-69 years. At baselineperceived control was assessed using a scale adapted from theWHITEHALL II Study, MacArthur Foundation program on MidlifeDevelopment and The New Barometer Studies. Each participant wasinterviewed using a standard questionnaire and underwent physicialexamination and blood tests. Deaths and causes of deaths among therespondents were registered. Multivariate logistic regression analysisand Cox proportional hazards models were used.In women low perceived control was associated with higherprevalence of hypertension, low physical activity, smoking, and theaccumulation of at least 3 CVD risk factors. In men, low perceivedcontrol was related to higher prevalence of low physical activity andsmoking, but also with lower prevalence of overweight and obesity.The relationship between percei ; ved control and all-cause mortalitywas explained mainly by the influence of major CVD risk factors.Low perceived control was indpendent of main CVD risk factorsdeterminant of CVD mortality and may be considered a CVD riskfactor.
