Title: Biochemical indicators of malnutrition in surgery patients suffering from malignant neoplasm of laryx, throat and oral cavity

Abstract:

Patients with cancer of head and neck are particularly predisposed to cancer cachexia and protein-caloric malnutrition as a consequence of anatomical localization of tumours. Assessment of malnutrition in this group is particularly important, but there is no uniform and simple scheme of this assessment. The aim of the study was the analysis of diagnostic values of selected laboratory tests: TRR, albumin, RBP, transferin, TLC, Hb and BMI and prognostic indexes: PINI, CSI, CRP/TRR in regard to the degree of malnutrition and evaluation of an enzyme, alkaline RNase as potential, new indicator of malnutrition. The impact of surgery on studied parameters was also examined. For the purpose of this study the "scale of malnutrition risks" was created. Using this scale it was found that 30% of patients from the studied group were clinically or subclinicaly malnourished. CRP/TRR, and CSI in the malnourished subgroup were significantly higher. After 7-10 days after surgery there were no differences between the subgroups reported. The highest predictive values in assessment of malnutrition were for TRR, RBP, albumin, transferin and PINI. Strong correlations revealed between the "scale of malnutrition risk" and TRR albumin, RBP, Hb, PINI these parameters seems to be best indicators of malnutrition in the studied group. Alkaline RNase did not correlate with studied malnutrition markers.
