Title: Sex hormones in the healing process of experimental tongue and gastric ulcerations

Abstract:

Ulcerations developing within mucosa of gastrointestinal tract are related to alterations in hormone metabolisms. The aim of the study was to determine whether sex hormones influence the dynamic of tongue and gastric ulcers healing. The effect of testosterone, progesterone and oestradiol therapy on the healing process as well as on the mucosal blood flow was monitored. It was checked if the application of the EGF therapy at male rats influences the healing process. Tests were made whether those hormones change a gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid. The TNF-α and IL-1β status, oestradiol, progesterone and testosterone concentration as well as the gastrin level in blood plasma of animals were determined. Testosterone prolongs the healing process of tongue and gastric ulcers. Progesterone and oestradiol accelerate this process due to an increased blood flow, attenuated production of proinflammatory cytokines and inhibition of gastric secretion. Salivectomy leads to an increased testosterone level in plasma and delays tongue and gastric ulcers healing, however an introduction of the exogeneous EGF treatment counteracts those effects. Summarising, we can state that the obtained results confirm that sex hormones are important physiological factors participating in the mechanism of preserving the integrity of the upper gastrointestinal tract mucosa and in the healing process of chr ; onic ulcers.
