Insulin growth factors (IGF) and its binding proteins act in all phases of malignant tumor development: neoplastic transformation of cells, their proliferation , apoptosis, and also later in metastasing. The recent studies carried out in colon cancer patients concerning the role of IGF in this disease are contradictory. In this work the concentrations of IGFI, IGFII, free IGFI, binding proteins IGFBP2, IGFBP3 and ALS were measured in blood serum of 127 patients operated because of primary colonic cancer . The follow-up period was 12 month after the surgery. The control group consisted of 50 persons without any signs of neoplasm. The results were analyzed in relation to the advanced stage of the disease, age and BMI of patients as well as serum albumin concentrations. It was shown that: 1. the concentration of IGFBP2 in patients with cancer was almost twice as high as in the controls. 2. there was no correlation between the concentrations of the analyzed parameters and either stage of the disease or BMI. 3. one month after the operation IGFBP2/albumin ratio was higher in patients with the progression of the disease as compared to those without progression. Conclusion: among the studied parameteres only IGFBP2 could be useful for diagnosing and monitoring of colon cancer.
