Title: The estimated, late ankle joint stability after ankle fractures with syndesmosis tears

Abstract:

The objective of the study was to estimate the late level of stability of the ankle joint after ankle syndesmosis injuries (ASI) as well as to answer the following questions: what kind and degree of instability accompanies ASI injuries treated surgically in late observation? What are the main reasons for chronic, late and posttraumatic ankle instability after ASI injuries? How does the surgery influence the stability level? How does the type of ankle fracture influence ankle mortice stability? The study was performed on 93 patients. After performing the surgery, ankle joint analysis was conducted using x-ray examination in forced positions. The outcome of the examination led us to the following conclusions: ASI can lead to late ankle-lateral, medial and antero-lateral instability of the 1st degree. The main cause of instability are surgery mistakes, especially inaccurate or unstable reposition and stabilization. The surgery technique which most frequently caused the instability of the ankle joint was Chomicz-Kalewski’s stabilization. In the studied material, no relationship was found between the ASI fracture type and late instability of the ankle mortice.
