Title: Capillary density and blood viscosity in patients with cardiac syndrome X

Abstract:

Aims: Evaluation of structure and density of nailfold capillaries in patients with cardiac syndrome X. Comparison of nailfold capillary density, plasma and blood viscosity between patients with cardiac syndrome X, controls without coronary artery disease and patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: 75 patients were enrolled into the study: 25 patients with cardiac syndrome X (group X); 25 patients with coronary artery disease CCS I-II with stenosis of coronary arteries exceeding 50% (group W); 25 controls without angina and with negative exercise test (group Z). All individuals underwent: history and physical examination; electrocardiogram; laboratory tests; exercise test; blood and plasma viscosity; capillaroscopy and capillary flow measurement. In patients from group X myocardial perfusion scintigraphy was performed. Results: The capillaries with narrow arms were observed significantly more often in patients from groups X and W when compared with controls from group Z. Nailfold capillary density did not differ significantly between all patients. Blood and plasma viscosity was significantly higher in patients from groups X and W when compared with controls from group Z. Plasma viscosity was significantly higher in patients with cardiac syndrome X and class III CCS when compared with patients from group X and CCS class I or II. Myocardial perfusion defects were observed in majority of patients with cardiac syndrome X. In patients with cardiac syndrome X with transient myocardial perfusion defects in scintigraphy, higher (when compared with patients with normal scintigraphy) plasma viscosity was observed.
