Title: Levels of N-terminal fragment of pro–(B-type) natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) at rest versus electrocardiographic exercise test in stable angina patients without left ventricular dysfunction

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between resting plasma NT-proBNP levels and parameters derived from an ECG exercise test in stable angina patients with a normal left ventricular systolic and diastolic function, without left ventricular hypertrophy or prior myocardial infarction. The results suggest that: 1. In stable angina patients resting NT-proBNP levels were associated with the sum of exercise-induced ischemic ST segment depressions despite a comparable workload during a standard symptom-limited exercise test; 2. Resting NT-proBNP levels were only weakly linked to left ventricular ejection fraction and left ventricular mass index; 3. The relationship between plasma NT-proBNP and the sum of exercise-induced ischemic ST segment deviations was attenuated, yet maintained on multivariate adjustment for other factors independently related to NT-proBNP, i.e. angiographic coronary artery disease extent and a lower creatinine clearance; 4. Resting NT-proNP levels are related to the magnitude and extent of exercise-induced ischemia in stable angina patients free of left ventricular dysfunction and hypertrophy irrespective of coronary artery disease.
