The thesis is devoted to the qualitative research and its use in health sciences such as public health. A social dimension of public health allows for the use of qualitative research methodology. The goal of the thesis is to show: How and why qualitative research methods can be used in public health? Public health and qualitative research are presented; definitions, paradigms, attributes and use. On the basis of four research strategies such as: case study, grounded theory, phenomenology and ethnography it is shown how these methods can be used in researching health and public health problems. The work presents also results of the qualitative data analysis based on focus group study, ensuring theoretical construct validation based on the theory of Social Capital and Sense of Community theory. Ethical aspects of qualitative research are discussed, its limitations and questions which such research rises. The thesis presents how and why qualitative research methods can be used in public health and public health research from both theoretical and practical perspective.
