Tytuł: Number and distribution of the interstitial cells of Cajal in the sigmoid colon of patients with diverticulosis
Abstrakt:
Diverticulosis is one of the most common morphologic changes of colon. The aetiology of this entity is, so far, unrevealed. Disturbances of motility, regulated by interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs), might play an important role. On this basis, the following aims of the study were established: to assess the ICCs quantity and distribution in the sigmoid colon of patients from the studied and control groups ; to determine the correlation between the number and distribution of the ICCs in the sigmoid colon of patients with diverticulosis and age, duration and type of the symptoms, concomitant diseases and anorectal manometry results. A total of 101 patients, operated in IIIrd Department of the General Surgery, Jagiellonian University Medical College since 2001 to 2006, were enrolled into the study. 34 patients operated for colonic diverticular disease were enrolled into the studied group. Control group consisted of 67 patients operated for non-obturative colonic cancer. Total ICCs number and the quantity of particular ICCs subpopulations were significantly lower in the studied group than in the control group. The correlation between the quantity of particular subpopulations and selected symptoms, concomitant diseases and anorectal manometry results were also established. ICCs number reduction might be an aetiopathogenetic factor of diverticular disease and may be responsible for sy ; mptoms occurrence, contributing to its clinical picture.
