Title: Anger and interpersonal skills in essential hypertension

Abstract:

In this research, the correlations between essential hypertension and anger (especially its expression and control), in the context of interpersonal skills and personality traits of patients with essential hypertension (EH), was examined. The 56-item State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI-2) was adapted to Polish conditions. The adaptation procedure was conducted on 358 persons: 222 women and 136 men at the age of 18-79. In the next part of the research 124 hypertensives were examined (71 women and 53 men in the age ranging from 18 to 70). Data regarding the history of their hypertension was obtained from medical documentation. Apart from STAXI-2, the subjects completed Social Competence Questionnaire and NEO-FFI. RESULTS: 1. Patients with EH are usually agreeable, strongly engaged in calming down their anger, avoid expressing their anger in aggressive behaviour and posses average interpersonal skills.. 2. Frequency of expressing anger in aggressive behaviour, engaging in calming down anger, and conscientiousness contribute to intensify the symptoms of EH in hypertensives. 3. Three personality types were distinguished among patients with EH: conscientious-agreeable type, introvertive-neurotic type, and neurotic-non agreeable type. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Patients with EH don’t make up a homogenous group, one can suppose that they differ from each other not only in personality bu ; t in pathophysiological pathways leading to hypertension, which should be taken into consideration in treatment process.
