Title: Validity and reliability of scales measuring health status and health–related quality of life of elderly people

Abstract:

The aim of this paper was to assess the theoretical validity and reliability of the scales measuring health-related quality of life used in comparative study and to define coefficients assessing replicability of factor structure between more than two samples. Analysis was done using the data gathered in Central European Network. The baseline study was carried out in 1999-2001 in simple random samples of: 529 noninstitutionalized elderly citizens of Krakow, 600 citizens of Bucharest (Romania) and 481 citizens of Zagreb (Croatia). All respondents participating in the study were 65-85 years old. Structured questionnaires were used, prepared on the basis of English version of original questionnaire used in Nestor study (The Netherlands), concerning health status and quality of life of elderly people living in the Netherlands. Statistical methods used were structural equations modeling: confirmatory factor analysis was done. Path coefficients were used to compute values of Tucker’s congruency coefficient and factors convergence coefficients in raw and standardized version. Reliability was measured with internal consistency method and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient use. Conducted analysis let consider that process of cultural adaptation succeeded considering the scales measuring depression symptoms, social support, functional status as well as short-form general health questionnaire SF ; -20. Conducted analysis let consider generalized congruency coefficient as a best factor similarity measure for assessing similarity of three factor structures, because its values are most similar to original congruency coefficient values. Other coefficients which can be used as similarity of three factor structures measures are NFI, IFI or CFI, computed by structural equation modelling software.
