Title: The evaluation of the outcome of amblyopia therapy in children with patching of the sound eye

Abstract:

The aim of my dissertation was the evaluation of the results of occlusion therapy with patching of the sound eye for various types of amblyopia The therapy was successful (obtaining the final visual acuity of 0.7 using a Snellen chart) in 311 of 412 (75.5%) children, including 206 of 246 (83.7%) with strabismic amblyopia, 45 of 64 (70.3%) with anisometropic amblyopia and 60 of 102 (58.8%) with strabismic-anisometropic amblyopia. Therapeutic success depended on the type and the severity of amblyopia, the initial age in the group with strabismic amblyopia, degree of anisometropia and degree of hypermetropia in the amblyopic eye in the group with anisometropic amblyopia, duration of therapy and the presence of binocular single vision (fusion and/or stereopsis) prior to the therapy. The following factors did not affect the success rate: the age and the duration of treatment of the patients with pure anisometropic amblyopia, the degree of anisometropia in the group with strabismic-anisometropic amblyopia, the degree of hypermetropia and the angle of strabismus in the amblyopic eye in the group with strabismic and anisometropic-strabismic types of amblyopia or astigmatism in the amblyopic eye. In the logistic regression analysis factors influencing the therapy outcome were the initial visual acuity and the age of the patients (in the group with strabismic and strabismic-anisometropic ; types of amblyopia). The risk of amblyopia recurrence in the group of 311 patients with successful treatment was 8,2% within one year and 22,2% within two years of follow-up after the cessation of treatment. The following factors affected the risk of amblyopia recurrence: the type of amblyopia and the age of children at the therapy cessation.
