Tytuł: Expression of proliferation and angiogenesis markers in human pituitary tumors
Abstrakt:
Anterior pituitary tumors are usually typical or atypical adenomas or carcinomas and represent about 10-15% of all intracranial tumors in adults. Topoisomerase II alpha is recognized as a reliable marker of tumor proliferative activity. It is the object of action of many known and applied oncologic medical agents. Cyclooxygenase-2 expression in pituitary tumors confirmed the correlation between its expression and the density of micro-vascularization studied with other methods. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have a strong inhibiting effect on the expression of COX-2. The study included 60 patients of the Department of Endocrinology after pituitary tumor surgery at the Department of Neurosurgery. College in the years 2003-2006 performed by any method, regardless of the preoperative pharmacological treatment. The aim of this study was the assessment of the expression of Topoisomerase II alpha and cyclooxygenase-2 in pituitary adenoma cells, their relations with demographic data, the type of adenoma and preoperative pharmacotherapy. Topoisomerase II alpha is a useful marker in distinguishing patients with adenomas which tend to recur, especially in hormonally inactive lesions. The expression of Topo IIα depends on the size of the tumor and the degree of infiltration of structures surrounding the sella turcica. Routine use of somatostatin analogs in acromegaly considerably inh ; ibits the expression of Topo IIα. Pituitary adenomas, especially hormonally inactive ones, possess a high COX-2 expression, what seems promising in the possibility of using drugs inhibiting the enzyme in the treatment of these tumors.
