Abstract:

The aim of this study was to asses if tooth calcification stages could be considered an indicator of a mandibular growth potential. The relationship between dental and chronological ages was evaluated. Material and methods: Orthodontic records of 300 patients from University Dental Clinic of Kraków was investigated. Skeletal maturity was assessed according to Baccetti, Franchi and McNamara cervical vertebrae maturation method. Tooth calcification and dental age were estimated by Demirjian standards. Statistical analysis of the data was performed with computer software Statistica. Gamma correlation coefficient was used to asses the relationship between Cervical Stages and tooth calcification stages. Bland-Altman graphical method was employed to evaluate relationship between chronological and dental ages. Kappa Cohen statistics were performed to confirm the reproducibility of measurements. Results: Although positive correlations were found between cervical vertebral maturation stages and calcification stages for lower canine, first and second premolar and second and third molar, only canine and first premolar can be used as a biological indicator of patient’s maturity, for both girls and boys. The canine and first premolar’s calcification stage G with parallel walls of the root canal and apical end partially closed suggest that pubertal growth spurt is to begin. Apical closure in ; dicates deceleration of facial growth. The comparison between Demirjian dental age and chronological age showed the dental age to be higher than chronological age, with the mean difference of 0,19 years.
