Title: Reproductive history and longevity, self-rated health status, body mass, body fat percentage, WHR and BMI in the rural population

Abstract:

Introduction Reproduction is energetically and physiologically costly for women; this may explain why women with high fertility often suffer health deterioration and higher mortality later in life. Aim To find out whether there is an association between reproductive history and nutritional status, self-rated health and longevity in women and men from a rural population. Materials and Methods We analyzed contemporary demographic data from a general questionnaire by interview and anthropometric measurement (cross-sectional study, N=296), as well as historical demographic data from parish records in Slopnice (analysis of parish records, N=541). Results We found a positive relationship between (1) the number of children a woman had, (2) the sum of all children’s birth weights, and (3) mean birth weight of all children with (a) maternal body mass, as well as (b) maternal body mass index (BMI). There was no relationship between reproductive history and percentage of body fat and waist-hip ratio (WHR) among women. Results were controlled for age, education and age at menarche. Women who rated their health status as ‘very bad’ or ‘bad’ were the youngest at first reproduction. There was a positive association between age at last reproduction and maternal longevity in the historical group (analysis of parish records). There was no relationship between any other element of reproductive hi ; story and maternal longevity. Conclusion This study confirms that women tend to raise weight and body mass index with increasing number of children. We conclude that public health decision makers should take into consideration the possibility that the number of children a woman has can pose a risk factor to female obesity, even in traditional, rural Polish populations.
