Abstrakt:

This research dissertation builds upon a pilot study from 2017 that explored how American veterans navigate the process of acquiring service dogs through online discussion forums. The current study aims to investigate veterans' interactions with various forms of online health information and their impact on health outcomes, treatment satisfaction, access to specialized care, and health literacy. The research examines the role of online health forums, general online discourse, social media, and news media in shaping veterans' healthcare decisions and experiences. It also explores the effects of timing when seeking online medical advice, the predictive power of online discourse for health behaviors, and the impact of public health initiatives, online support networks, and celebrity-led activities on veteran suicide prevention. The study highlights the difficulties veterans face in obtaining service dogs and emphasizes the need for improved processes and public education. It addresses barriers to mental health care accessibility, disparities in quality of care, and the impact of media coverage on the VA healthcare system. Social media analysis shows the importance of online support networks and targeted interventions for veterans' mental health outcomes and well-being. The study aims to inform strategies for improving veterans' health literacy and healthcare utilization.
