Tytuł: Attitudes of pre-service physical educational teachers towards inclusion of students with physical disabilities in mainstream physical education classes

Abstrakt:

Teachers' attitude is a factor determining the effectiveness of the process of inclusion. The aim of the research was to determine the attitudes of Polish physical education students towards pupils with physical disabilities (PD) in mainstream physical education (PE). Methodology: The Polish version of the ATIPDPE-R-PL (Attitude towards Teaching Individuals with Physical Disabilities in Physical Education-Revised) questionnaire, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was used in the study. The research covered 1204 PE students surveyed in two time periods (572 students studying at one university in year 2016, and 632 students form 11 universities in year 2023). The ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, and multiple hierarchical regressions were used to analyze data. Results indicate that students have predominantly positive attitudes towards inclusion, however they understand that the process can also have negative effects. During the 7-year period separating the studies an increase in attitudes was observed (respectively: x̄=54.98 in the year 2016, and x̄=62.28 in the year 2023, p=0.005). In both studies the attitude towards inclusion was higher among women than men. Only 12.2% of the responders declared attending PE courses for people with disabilities during their education at the university. Regression analyzes confirmed that the three components of the TPB ; are predictors of intention and accounted for more than 50% of the variance. Conclusions: Women showed higher pro-inclusive attitudes than men. There was no significant difference of the attitudes and intentions between undergraduate and graduate students.
