Title: The role of early maladaptive schemas in the etiology of sexual offenses

Abstract:

Introduction: Sexual violence is a significant social problem that requires effective methods of offender treatment. Effective therapy for offenders plays a crucial role in the prevention of sexual crimes. The effectiveness of interventions depends on understanding the etiology of underlying causes of criminal sexual behaviour. Research objective: The scientific work focusing on the role of early maladaptive schemas in sexual criminality aims to better understand the etiological mechanisms of this phenomenon and broaden therapeutic intervention possibilities. The research analysed how the characteristics of offenses are related to offenders’ early maladaptive schemas. Furthermore, the study examined the relationships between the severity of different forms of violence and early maladaptive schemas. The study included 152 males convicted of sexual offences, and data from 102 offenders qualified for analysis. Three subgroups of offenders were identified based on the age of victims: offenders involved in sexual exploitation of children aged up to 14 years (N=49), offenders involved in sexual exploitation of individuals aged 15-17 years (N=20), and offenders involved in sexual exploitation of adults, i.e., above 18 years of age (N=33). A legitimate classification of individuals into specific research groups was conducted. Method: The study was conducted in f ; our units of correlational facilities: Rzeszów Penitentiary, Kielce Penitentiary, Kraków Detention Center, and Pińczów Penitentiary. Early maladaptive schemas, understood as pervasive and detrimental life patterns consisting of memories, emotions, beliefs, and bodily sensations, were measured using an adapted version of the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3-PL). The characteristics of committed offenses, derived from penitentiary records, were analysed using a self-constructed questionnaire designed for extracting information from prisoner files and the Violence Scales (Beisert, 2012). Results: The analyses revealed a relationship between the severity of early maladaptive schemas (EMS) and the intensity of sexual violence committed by the offenders. It was found that offense characteristics, such as victim selection based on age, gender, nature of the relationship with the perpetrators, recurrence of the offence, duration, and strategies such as planning and deception, differentiated the offenders in terms of EMS. Sexual offences committed by men who exhibit heightened schemas in the areas of Other-Directedness, Overvigilance/Inhibition were more frequently directed against individuals known to them. Offenders who sexually exploited children up to aged up to 14 showed high levels of schemas related to emotional inhibition and self-sacrifice. In the cas ; e of male offenders convicted of sexual crimes in Poland, an increase in the severity of the domain Impaired Limits and related schemas correlated with a specific style of offense focused on forced vicim obedience. Furthermore, a correlation was found between the severity of EMS and the intensity of sexual violence involved in the committed offense. Conclusions: Based on the conducted research, it can be concluded that early maladaptive schemas play a significant role in the etiology of sexual offending, influencing the manner in which the offense was committed and the victim selected. Offender therapy can be an effective method for treating sexual offenders as it enables the identification and modification of maladaptive schemas that underlie problematic sexual behaviours. Such therapy can also contribute to preventing recidivism by developing healthier strategies for managing emotions and needs, as well as improving the quality of interpersonal relationships. Individualization of therapeutic interventions in light of the presented research findings is crucial. This approach should encompass therapeutic methods focused on working with specific maladaptive schemas. The incorporation of these structures can be pivotal and valuable in the development of preventive models and the planning of therapeutic and preventive interventions.
