Title: The pharmacognostic cabinet of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow compared to other university collections in Europe + Supplement

Abstract:

The presented work describes the Pharmacognostic Cabinet established by Professor Florian Sawiczewski in the years 1825-1857 at the Department of Pharmacy at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. Cracow’s collection was compared with two selected academic pharmacognostic collections created in a similar time frame in countries with similar geopolitical conditions; namely collection of medicines from the Department of Pharmacognosy of the University of Vienna (Drogensammlung des Departments für Pharmakognosie) and the pharmacognostic collection of the University of Marburg (Pharmakognostische Sammlung der Philipps-Universität Marburg). Based on available archival sources and contemporary scientific studies, the collections mentioned above in three pharmacy teaching centers have been characterised in terms of resources and functions. Additionally, an in situ analysis of the current state of preservation of these collections was carried out and their contemporary significance was defined. The first chapter of this work presents the thematic scope, together with the definition of the Pharmacognostic Cabinet. The second chapter defines the objectives of this work. The subsequent chapters (3-4) discuss the current state of knowledge about the Pharmacognostic Cabinet in Cracow, the time and territorial framework, as well as methodology and the characteristic of sources. Chapter fiv ; e presents the definition of pharmacognosy as a new academic discipline and the history of its teaching at an academic center in Cracow, other Polish centers, in Vienna and Marburg. The sixth chapter discusses the process of forming the Sawiczewski Collection in addition to two other European collections, while the seventh chapter presents the contemporary state of its preservation. Finally, the research results are discussed and summarized. The Appendix contains biographies of the founders of the researched collections. The addition to this work consists of the supplement containing the inventories of the Department of Pharmacy, from 1811-1830 kept in the archives of the Jagiellonian University.
