Abstract:

This study describes the history of Vilnius pharmacies between the early 19th cen tury and 1915. The study is focused on the history of pharmacies and on the methods of teaching pharmacy adopted at the Vilnius University and the occupational training system of pharmacists from 1795 until 1915.The study consists of five sections and an appendix. The second section discusses the rules governing pharmacy operation in the times of PolishLithuanian Common-wealth, and describes the history of pharmacies active in Vilnius until 1795. The third section identify changes that took place in the formation process of Vilnius pharmacy between 1795-1915. The analysis shows the impact of these changes on the image of the pharmacy in Vilnius over the years 1795-1915. The fourth section of this study discusses the rules adopted in teaching pharmacy in the years 1 795-1915. The fifth section of the study describes pharmacists associations established in Vilnius between 1795-1915. The appendix contains histories of 33 pharmacies active in Vilnius between the mid-18th century and 1915 as well as biographies of pharmacy owners and selected pharmacy employees.
