This study investigates the influence of temporary changes in the dental occlusion on the parameters of neuromuscular coordination, as well as to identify temporomandibular disorders (TMD) among patients with cervical spine dysfunctions. Materiał and methods: 102 participants took part in the study: 51 patients with cervical spine dysfunctions ( study gro up) and 51 subjects in control group. The questionnaire of the RDC/TMD was used to indentify TMD. Several methods were employed to assess the relationships during changed dental occlusion: surface electromyography (EMG) to assess activity and neuromuscular coordination of masticatory muscles, an inclinometer CROM3 to measure the cervical range of motion (CROM) and the Fukuda test to evaluate postural control. Results: TMD and disturbances in neuromuscular coordination of the masticatory muscles were more frequent in the study group. Temporary change in dental occlusion caused an increase in EMG activity of masseter muscles in all participants and an increase in CROM in the study group. Postura! control disturbances occurred more frequently in the study group and did not improve after a temporary change in the dental occlusion. Conclusions: Cervical spme dysfunctions were associated with a higher incidence of disturbances in neuromuscular coordination of the masticatory muscles, TMD, limited CROM, and post ; ural control disturbances. Temporary change in the dental occlusion increased CROM and electromyographic activity of masseter muscles in patients with cervical spine dysfunctions.
