Title: Metabolic syndrome, individual risk factors for ischemic heart disease, and biochemical markers of atherosclerosis : a cohort-based study

Abstract:

A cross-sectional study of active-duty police officers (n=235;19F), aged 27-58 years, was conducted. Traditional risk factors for CVD (overweight, obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension), and metabolic syndrome were established as prevalent in over 46% of subjects. Metabolic syndrome, psychological stress, and hypertension increased the chance of coronary artery plaque. Carotid IMT value correlated with atherosclerosis risk factors and CRP levels. There were positive associations of perceived stress with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, hypertension, and plasma 8-iso-PGF2α levels. Furthermore, low leisure-time physical activity increased the chance of MetS, and was positively associated with waist circumference, and triglyceride levels. In conclusion, the study demonstrated high prevalence of traditional risk factors for CVD in police officers, as well as highlighted that psychological stress was related to the accompanying MetS components, i.e. obesity, hypertension, and IR. Its outcomes clearly indicate that perceived stress, physical activity, and the metabolic factors such as inflammation and oxidative stress, may also be instrumental in the clustering of CVD risk factors.
