Biological drugs are one of the greatest innovations in the medicine. Despite their increasing use in the pediatric population, there is insufficient knowledge about their influence on the function and morphology of the thyroid gland, the dysfunction of which is the most common endocrinopathy in childhood. For example, the literature data on the effect of the very commonly used anti-TNF-alpha (anti-tumor necrosis factoralpha) therapy on thyroid function is very diverse and concerns mainly the adult patient population. The own studies assessed the function and morphology of the thyroid gland in pediatric patients treated with anti-TNF-alpha for Crohn's disease and in patients treated with enzyme replacement therapy for storage diseases. The results indicate the preventive role of anti-TNFalpha therapy in the development of thyroid gland disorders and the high usefulness of thyroid ultrasound examination as a tool in identifying patients at risk of developing thyroid disorders. In the group of patients with storage diseases, the results indicate that the use of enzyme replacement therapy may have a protective effect against the accumulation of non-metabolized substances in the thyroid gland and thus prevent disturbances in the function and morphology of this gland.
