Title: Assessment of the effect of lactoferrin intake on the incidence of late-onset sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis in preterm infants

Abstract:

Introduction: Despite advancements in the field of neonatology, sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis remain to be the main causes of mortality at neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Lactoferrin is an endogenous glycoprotein of the transferrin family, showing an immunomodulatory, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effect of lactoferrin intake on the incidence of late-onset sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis in preterm infants. Material and methods: 453 preterm infants hospitalised at the Department of Neonatology at the University Hospital in Krakow between 2010 and 2015 were enrolled in the study. Results: In the study group of preterm infants who received lactoferrin, necrotising enterocolitis was statistically significantly less frequent. Statistically significant differences were observed between the study group and control with regard to the incidence of diagnosis with late-onset sepsis. The percentage of children with late-onset sepsis was higher in the study group. No statistically significant differences were observed between the study group and control with regard to repeated diagnosis of late-onset sepsis. If late-onset sepsis occurred in the study group, subsequent cases of generalised infection were less frequent than in the control group. Conclusions: In the study group, necrotising enterocolitis ; was statistically significantly less frequent. Further studies concerning the effect of lactoferrin intake on the incidence of late-onset sepsis are required.
