The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the level of the burden of spouses of patients in the symptomatic remission state of the Unipolar (CHAJ, 60 patients) or Bipolar (CHAD, 65 patients) Affective Disorder and the family functioning, and coping styles of both the spouses. The study made use of the following questionnaires: IEQ, GHQ-28, DAS, KOR and CISS. The level of the perceived burden of the spouses in CHAD and CHAJ groups is significant even during the symptomatic remission. The burden level was significantly higher for spouses with worse appraisal of the marital adjustment and the family functioning in both groups (and higher in the CHAD than in the CHAJ group). In both groups, a relationship between the higher level of the perceived burden and the emotion-focused coping style was discovered (and higher in the CHAD group). For the problem-oriented coping style a negative correlation with the perceived burden level was found only in the CHAD group. In the CHAD group a positive correlation between the spouse’s perceived burden level and the patient’s tendency to use emotion-oriented coping style was found. Spouses who estimated their mental health condition more poorly demonstrated higher levels of the perceived burden in both groups. It is important to expand professional support for spouses of patients with affective disord ; ers should.
