Title: Significance of latent Epstein-Barr infection in Hodgkin disease in children

Abstract:

As the data about the occurrence and role of latent Epstein-Barr (EBV) infection in Hodgkin’s disease (HD) are still unequivocal, studies on this topic were performed. A group of 61 patients (2-18 years old) treated in University Children’s Hospital of Krakow (1997-2004) were analyzed. In each case histopathological type was verified. Immunohistochemical and molecular methods were used to detect latent EBV infection. Latent EBV infection was present in 44,3% of cases. It occurred more often in boys, country children and was significantly related to the presence of night sweats, lower leukocyte number and influenced immunological tests as well (lower IgM concentration, lower PWM response index). In patients with present latent EBV infection ESR after 3 chemotherapy cycles was significantly lower than in the group without latent EBV infection. Treatment results (10-year EFS – 91,2%) were consistent with those presented by other centers. No influence of latent EBV infection on treatment results was identified. Further studies on latent EBV infection in HD patients are needed to better recognize the biology of this disease and to invent more effective and safer therapy modalities.
