Quantitative analysis of six Cladonia species (C. arbuscula, C. gracilis, C. furcata, C. macilenta ssp. floerkeana, C. subulata, C. uncialis) revealed the presence of usnic acid and atranorin in four and fumarprotocetaric acid in five of the examined species. Quantitative analysis indicated three of the examined species: Cladonia arbuscula, C. uncialis and C. macilenta ssp. floerkeana as a potential sources of the tested compounds. The amount of the compounds in Polish and Icelandic species was also compared quantitatively - usnic acid was detected in higher amount in Icelandic Cladonia species, while in the case of atranorin and fumarprotocetraric acid the amount was greater in Polish species. Isolated usnic acid and fumarprotocetraric acid, as well as commercially available atranorin, revealed selective cytotoxic and antiproliferative activity, and also influenced the morphology, actin cytoskeleton and migration activity of HTB140 melanoma, Du145 prostate cancer cells and human skin fibroblast HSF. Usnic acid was the only compound to stimulate apoptosis in Du145 cells.
