Title: Assessment of the implementation of secondary prevention guidelines in patients after ischemic stroke

Abstract:

Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability. Patients after stroke has increased risk of recurrent stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Implementation of secondary prevention guidelines reducing number of these events. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge about the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease and evaluate the implementation of the recommendations for secondary prevention in patients under 81 years after the first ever ischemic stroke. On the interview 131 patients (50 women), mean age 63.9 ± 10.3 years was examined. Normal blood pressure know half of stroke patients and normal total cholesterol knows every fifth patient diagnosed with lipid disorders, and every tenth patient without lipid disorders. Control of blood pressure was achieved in 36% of patients with hypertension. Elevated total cholesterol level was found in 54% of the patients with dyslipidemia. Elevated glucose level was found in 85% of patients with diabetes. Most overweight or obese patients has not taken any action to reduce their weight. More than half of the patients reduced the fat intake and consumed more vegetable oils. The most common lifestyle modification taken by patients after ischemic stroke was smoking cessation or reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked per day.
