Title: The effects of vitamin D supplementation on the rate of fetal growth with growth restriction
Abstract:
Introduction: Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) can be defined as fetal growth below the gestational age. FGR increases the risk of intrauterine fetal death, infant death as well as complications in childhood. There is no specific and proven, effective treatment of FGR. As FGR is a serious pregnancy complcation finding the right substance that could be beneficial in treating FGR is crucial and necessary. Medical research shows there may be positive influence of vitamin D supplementation on fetal growth. The aim: If the rate of fetal growth and improvement of cerebral and umbilical circulation in pregnant women with FGR (Type I) differs depending on whether the patient supplemented with vitamin D in the recommended dose of 2000 IU, not supplemented at all or supplemented with vitamin D in low doses (below 500 IU). Methodology: The study was conducted at Obstetrics and Perinatology Clinic in Krakow from 10.2017 to 03.2019. The participants were divided into 2 groups based on medical history of vitamin D intake survey results. The first group were Participants who took vitamin D in the recommended dosage. The other group were Participants who did not take vitamin D at all or in low doses. Results: Greater fetal weight gain can be observed in women with FGR who intake vitamin D in the recommended dose of 2000 IU. Vitamin D supplementation in the dosage of 2000 IU may have an effect ; on the decrease of the pulsality index value in umbilical artery and may have an effect on the increase of cerebroplacental ratio.
