Tytuł: Perception of communication between physician and relatives of patients at the end of life residing in long-term care facilities – a comparative analysis in six European countries

Abstrakt:

The aims of study were 1) to describe the state of the art about the end of life (EOL) communication between the physician and the relatives of the patient residing in the long-term-care facilities (LTCFs), 2) to compare perceptions of the relatives of deceased LTCF residents of their communication with physicians by country and type of facility and 3) to determine what factors are associated with the quality of this communication. The study is based on a review of literature and a retrospective cross-sectional design. The original study was carried out as part of the international scientific project with acronym PACE. We analyzed the responses of 761 relatives of deceased residents regarding their communication with physicians. The Family Perception of Physician-Family Communication scale was used to assess the quality of EOL communication with physicians. The highest quality of physician-relatives communication was in Italy and the lowest in Finland. In Italy, the quality of EOL communication was higher in the facilities where patients were cared for by a primary care physician compared to the facilities where a physician is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In Poland, the opposite was true. A higher number of visits of the physician in the last week of the patient’s life, a higher number of hours the relative spent with the dying person, also in the last week of thei ; r life, as well as a lower level of emotional burden of the relative caring for the dying person, were associated with a better perception of the quality of the physician-relative communication.
