Malignant tumours of the head and neck region account for 8%, and oral cancer for 2% of all malignancies. Early diagnosis of the tumour is considered to be the factor which directly influences the results of treatment of patients with oral cancer. It also depends on efficacy of the used diagnostic methods. The basic procedure in evaluation of pathological lesions of the oral cavity is, apart from clinical examination, histological assessment of biopsy specimen and also cytological diagnostics by oral brush biopsy. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the efficacy of cytological examination and usefulness of cytological methods in diagnostics of oral mucosa neoplasms, comparison of sensitivity and specificity of cytology in relation to histological examination as a final procedure. In the analysed group, sensitivity of cytology in diagnostics of malignant tumours reached 86,67% and specificity 100%, sensitivity in diagnostics of SCC was 85,72%. The following conclusions were presented: cytological examination obtained by OBB is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic procedure useful in the early stages of oral cancer, feasible in general dental practice. Despite high sensitivity and specificity in diagnostics of oral SCC, cytological examination, in every case, requires correlation with histological examination of the biopsy specimen, which is the basis for the final tumour diag ; nostics and treatment planning.
