Abstract:

Background: Hyperglycemia complicating pregnancy can result in the oxidative- antioxidative imbalance in pregnant women. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the oxidative- antioxidative imbalance in pregnancy complicated by well controlled diabetes. Materials and methods: Measurements were performed on a group of 52 diabetic pregnant (GDM) and 36 healthy pregnant women (HP). Total plasma antioxidant capacity (FRAP), glutathione reductase activity (GR), glutathione peroxidase activity (GPx) were measured in plasma, reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells hemolysate, carbonyl groups (CG), CRP, fructosamine and C-peptid in serum. Results: GR and GPx were significantly lower in GDM. There was no difference in the level of FRAP and GSH. Concentration of fructosamine and C-peptid were significantly lower in GDM. The significant correlation between GPx and fructosamine concentration in HP was found. The significant associations between C-peptid level and FRAP, GR and GSH in HP were observed. The relationship between C-peptid and GPx was found using logistic regression. CG were elevated in GDM patients. No impact of iron supplementation on markers of oxidative stress was observed. Conclusions: We did not observed differences in concentration of FRAP and GSH, but the antioxidant enzymes activity was decreased in GDM. Increased CG level was observed, which demonstra ; ted higher protein glycooxydation. Significant correlation between C-peptide and antioxidant markers in HP can indicate influence of insulin resistance on oxidative- antioxidative balance.
