Abstract:

The thesis addresses the quality of life as well as functional disorders of the digestive system in patients after laparoscopic surgeries for cholelithiasis or rectal cancer. These procedures are one of the most common surgical procedures performed in Poland in the realm of general and oncological surgery. The thesis was inspired by the enormous emphasis of modern surgery not only on the appropriate surgical outcome but also on the satisfactory quality of life of patients after laparoscopic transabdominal procedures. The thesis consists of 3 monothematic articles published in scientific journals with impact factor. It covers the rules of safe cholecystectomy and long-term outcomes after this procedure with regard to the quality of life of patients. It also touches on the efficacy of the POLARS clinical tool in predicting functional disorders of the digestive system in patients after laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal cancer. The impact of this study is bringing clinically relevant information allowing for a more tailored treatment of patients with rectal cancer as well spreading and implementing the rules of safe cholecystectomy across european surgical units.
