Chronic aspirin intake after successful desensitization is an effective and safe treatment method for patients with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD). Aspirin provocation test remains a reliable diagnostic method of aspirin hypersensitivity. Objectives: 1. The assessment of the impact of chronic aspirin therapy on selected clinical, biochemical and radiological factors in patients with N-ERD. 2. An attempt to create an artificial neural network (ANN) that would allow a noninvasive and rapid diagnosis of N-ERD. It was shown that chronic aspirin intake leads to a decrease in periostin concentration and eosinophil count in induced sputum. It was also demonstrated that chronic aspirin intake does not affect the levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory eicosanoids produced locally (ie, in induced sputum supernatant and nasal lavage) and systemically (ie, in urine). The ANN can be used to predict the diagnosis of N-ERD in patients with asthma. The sensitivity of the ANN for the prediction of N-ERD was 94% and the specificity was 73%.
