Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) affects fetal tissues. It has been established that central nervous system is more prone to damage caused by PAE. The data on the prevalence of urinary system defects among patients with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is conflicting. The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence of urinary system effects, impaired kidney function and hypertension among children with FASD. 102 patients with FASD participated in the study, the data for the control group, the patients from Gastroenterology and General Pediatrics department, was collected retrospectively from the hospital database. The patients underwent renal ultrasound, had blood pressure taken twice and their serum creatine level was evaluated. An increased prevalence of urinary system defects an decreased kidney size among FASD patients was established. There was no difference in kidney function between the groups, and no risk of hypertension among children with FASD was demonstrated.
