Title: Hearing and balance disorders as the most common ENT manifestations of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases

Abstract:

The research aim the study analyzed the influence of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases on the incidence of symptoms from the head and neck organs. She also focused on assessing the frequency of hearing and balance disorders in patients diagnosed with Lyme disease. In the first investigation, 162 patients who presented to the outpatient clinic for tick-borne diseases, were enrolled in the study. The most common complaint was tinnitus, vertigo and dizziness, headache, unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The patients also had tick-borne coinfections, among them the most common was Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana. The aim of second study was to assess the prevalence of SSNHL caused by various factors, most importantly those potentially related to Lyme disease. The study includes a group of 86 patients who were hospitalized due to SSNHL. In this group, nine patients presented with positive antibodies toward Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. This group was treated with antibiotics and experienced partial or complete regression of their deafness. The third study included a group of 38 patients, who were hospitalized due to vertigo/dizziness. In 20 patients the Romberg trial was positive. The degree of vestibular dysfunction as shown by the VENG test was associated with the rate of hearing loss as confirmed by the Auditory Brainstem Response test and it mainly ; concerned high-frequency sounds.
