Title: How the extreme insufficiency of the sphincter complex affects the biopsychosocial aspects of patients' lives in the perspective of repair procedures

Abstract:

Stool incontinence, regardless of pathogenesis, is a traumatic experience and makes it impossible to perform physiological, psychological and social functions, drastically reducing the patient’s quality of life. The main aim of the study was to investigate the psychosocial functioning of patients with fecal incontinence before reconstructive procedures (sphincter plastic surgery-PZ, artificial sphincter implantation-SZ, gracilloplasty-GP) and to assess whether the applied surgical procedures have an impact on quality improvement and lifestyle modification. It was investigated whether rectal electrostimulation (in the case of the PZ procedure) and personality traits affect the functional effect of the procedure. 65 patients (16 men, 49 women) were examined with symptomatic tests of JW and FISI, the FIQL quality of life scale, CIIS psychological tests (tests the style of coping with stress) and GSES (tests the sense of self-efficacy). It was found that the above-mentioned surgical procedures improve defecation control, and thus improve psychosocial functioning. It was found that rectal electrostimulation did not improve symptomatic but the functional effect of the procedure, and that personality traits may affect patient’s satisfaction with the procedure.
