The thesis is a monothematic set of three original articles. It was aimed at broadening knowledge on the needs assessment and support received by metastatic breast cancer in Poland. The following research questions were formulated and answered: - A comprehensive assessment of the current situation of the needs and support of metastatic breast cancer patients in Poland by systematic review including survey studies; - Cultural adaptation and validation of the ”Count Us, Know Us, Join Us” survey assessing selected types of support; - Prospective study with the use of the validates questionnaire assessing emotional, informational and support needs among Polish patients with metastatic breast cancer; - Assessment of the factors affecting the level of satisfaction with communication with healthcare professionals among metastatic breast cancer patients as well as defining the roles of providers of support for patients. In the systematic review, no assessment of the current situation of metastatic breast cancer patients in Poland was identified. An adequate tool for the assessment of support was prepared and 320 patients were surveyed. The results from Poland are comparable to those from other populations, defined in the systematic review. The thesis forms a background for improvement by a comprehensive assessment of the current situation both around the world and in Poland an ; d might be used to reform the support system.
