Title: Magnesium body supply, blood pressure and the structure and function of the heart and arteries
Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this thesis was to evaluate magnesium daily intake and confirmed the relationship between magnesium parameters of body supply and the structure and function of the heart and arteries. Methods: This cross-sectional cohort study included 173 people from 60 families. To assess magnesium dietary intake original dietary questionnaire was performed. 24- hour urinary magnesium excretion was assessed to evaluate magnesium body supply. Parameters of the structure and function of the heart and arteries were measured with recommended methods. To evaluate the relationship between magnesium body supply and BP, office measurements and ABPM were performed. Results: Mean daily magnesium intake was 319,1 mg in women and 357,6 mg in men and was the lowest in older men’s generation with reference to RDA. There was a significant correlation of daily magnesium intake with a caloric value of a diet and irrelevant correlation with 24- hour urinary magnesium excretion. Multivariate regression analyses confirmed negative association between urinary magnesium excretion and SBP in ABPM (β -1,504; p=0,02) and ABI (β -0,031; p=0,01). Conclusions: In the study population we confirmed insufficient magnesium intake with reference to RDA. Urinary magnesium excretion is a valuable parameter of magnesium body supply. Magnesium influences on circadian BP profile and ; arterial stiffness.
