Tytuł: Selected health detenninants m men who belong to the Bear subculture
Abstrakt:
The Bear subculture consists of men having sex with men (MSM), among them homosexual and bisexual men, who consider massive or muscular physique and pronounced male phenotypic traits, such as facial and body hair, physically attractive. Health determinants in this group include both factors associated with being a member of the MSM population, such as the exposure to sexual minority stigma, as well as an increased prevalence of obesity, which constitutes an important factor in the etiology of many health problems and is associated with exposure to weight stigma. Previous studies, however, focused primarily on the sexual health of men from this population and the prevalence of behaviors relevant from the perspective of HIV prophylaxis. The aim of this dissertation was to fill existing gaps in the literature and investigate health determinants in Bears which are indicated by theoretical frameworks of minority stress model and intersectionality perspective, as well as the subcultural norms characteristic of this community. To this end, two research project were conducted which included questionnaires and anthropological measurements. The analyses conducted indicated that compared to other MSM, men who identified as Bears were characterized by increased prevalence of obesity and associated health adversities. Members of the Bear subculture also revealed experiences ofboth sexual ; minority and weight stigma. Both types of stigma exposure were significantly and negatively related to self-esteem in self-identified Bears. Applied theoretical models and conducted analyses supported the conclusion that subcultural identities provide an important context for health and are associated with unique psychological dynamics. The research conducted also have practical implications indicating both the need for health promotion interventions in the Bear community and for tailoring these interventions to Bears' subcultural norms.
