The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of interventions in improving the awareness and control of risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the response to symptoms of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in school students in Małopolskie Voivodeship. The programme was carried out in two stages, and the students were randomly assigned to two groups: the initial intervention group (INT) and the initial control group (KONTR). In stage I, the INT group participated in a series of educational trainings, and the KONTR group was not subjected to any interventions at that time; in stage II the groups were switched. All students filled in a questionnaire three times: before starting education, after two months, and after four months. The study showed, that the most prevalent CVD risk factor among school children was insufficient physical activity. Other risk factors in descending order were: poor nutrition, smoking, overweight and obesity. The series of educational trainings improved knowledge about CVD risk factors, MI and stroke in the INT group compared to the KONTR group in stage I and in the KONTR group in stage II of the study. The intervention in both groups improved achievement of physical activity and eating habits goals, and additionally in the INT group the number of non-smoking students increased. Male sex and age were associa ; ted with better educational effectiveness and increased efficiency in achieving prevention goals.
